Disney may have owned the animated world since the 1930’s, but some animation companies were certainly on the rise by the late 1990’s. One of them being Dreamworks. They had some very good movies in the Prince of Egypt(1998), and Shrek (2001). They needed to find a franchise, however. They saw their best bet was with Shrek and they went with it. Sequels often suffer under the weight of their predecessor, but the Shrek 2 team found a way to deliver an even better movie.
Princess Fiona’s parents invite her and Shrek to dinner to celebrate her marriage. If only they knew the newlyweds were both ogres. Suddenly things go very much awry.
Honestly, not a whole lot to hate about Shrek or Shrek 2. Yes, the humor sometimes gets overly childish and I never love that. However, it is far more fitting of Shrek given the characters they are dealing with and the various topics being discussed.
What the writers of Shrek seem to understand is that character is the most important part in any film regardless of genre. Development in a character either positive or negative is a great way to make a movie.
Shrek and Fiona are now married, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have their disagreements. Especially when Fiona’s parents summon her to celebrate their marriage. Shrek believes they were terrible parents and that they would not be welcomed because of how they look. Despite them locking her in a tower, Fiona still has feelings for her parents. She wants to see them and introduce Shrek. Sure enough, there is a contentious reunion which leaves to Fiona and Shrek fighting. Shrek realizes that while he has a point, his stubbornness and other more ogre-like traits is putting unnecessary strain on the marriage. From this point on we watch Shrek evolve his character, willing to make sacrifices for the one he loves.
Again, some of the humor makes me roll my eyes in dismay, but a lot of it works. Poking fun at fairytales and even a little at Disney makes it all the better. In this regard ,I think the film improves upon the original.
Sometimes an actor plays a character perfectly and it shines for all the world to see. Robin Williams as Genie, Ellen DeGeneres as Dory, and Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots.
Changing the fairy godmother/Prince Charming from a heroic figure to a villainous one was a very clever move. It adds a twist onto preconceived notions which is very apt given the whole point of Shrek.
The message behind Shrek 2 is those outward appearances may have their benefits, but nothing beats a good heart and a great personality. In the end, that is what shines through.
Sequels often falter because they focus more on being a sequel than actual character development. Shrek 2 develops a character, namely Shrek in a new and interesting way. It has wonderful action, humor, and heart mixed into an ever-expanding Shrek universe. Definitely Dreamwork’s best film at this point.
