When Finding Nemo was released, perhaps I was too cynical, but I never understood the appeal. The older I get, and the more I watch it. The more I connect and cherish it. It’s a truly wonderful film.
Marlin, an overprotective clownfish and the father of his only surviving son, Nemo, must set out on the adventure of his life to rescue his son.
Every time I see the film, I enjoy more than the previous time. It’s a movie I see new things in with every viewing and I love that. So as far as things that I dislike about the film there isn’t much to say.
Sometimes a voice cast is the focus of the film and it loses its artistic merit. However, Finding Nemo is able to balance both a very talented cast with artistically expressive animation. This voice cast is amazing, but Ellen DeGeneres really impresses as Dory, the fish with no short-term memory.
It’s a fish out of water story mixed with a buddy comedy. The main conflicts are man vs nature and man versus self.
The animation in this film is still impressive. Among the more beautiful that Pixar has produced. However, within it lies a darker point. The sea is littered with sea junk. While some of it as grown into artificial reefs, others are very dangerous and destructive.
I like the father/son dynamic here with Marlin and Nemo. Marlin after the experiences he had to deal with has become overprotective of his son. Meanwhile, Nemo resents this and rebels against him. Marlin has to go on a personal journey along with the physical one to understand his flaws as a father.
Nemo as well must see that his actions had led to a precarious situation. Not that he can’t experience life, but that his father too has some good points that he must respect.
The movie has a lot of humor and for the most part, it works well. It’s okay to be cute, but clever. (Though there are a couple of toilet jokes in here.)
Mixing well with the humor is the character development and the emotional depth that takes this film from something absent-minded to something beautiful and profound.
The basic mantra of the story is “Just keep swimming.” Which translate into human terms as don’t give up. Even if things look bad, we can still work together to find new solutions. Don’t give up.
There is a lesson about not living your life in fear of what could happen. Life for the best moments. Adventure is the spice of life.
Finally, something I find unique to this story is the concept of not letting your disabilities stop you from achieving great things. We all have our adjectives as to why we can’t achieve our dreams in life. It’s important that they don’t run our lives.
The more times I watch Finding Nemo, the more I enjoy it. It has a lot of important messages for us all. The most important is not being afraid to take risks, and not letting your disabilities stop you from accomplishing great things. Most of all, just keep swimming.
