31 Days of Halloween- Tremors 3

Tremors 3: Back To Perfection (2001)

Some things just can’t be unseen.

Genre: Action, Comedy, Horror

Starring: Michael Gross

I adore Tremors (1990) and I have been known to enjoy Tremors 2 (1996) to some degree as well.   So, after watching those two, I decided to go for Tremors 3. It was soon after when I learned of my mistake.

With the exception of Michael Gross as Burt Gummer, the artillery crazy conspiracy nut that makes Dale Gribble from “King of the Hill” look like a comedic cartoon character (Wait a minute!), this film is pretty forgettable.  He returns to Perfection, Nevada where his old nemisis, the grabloids appear.  Just as it happened in the second, things get out of hand.

As Mr. Goldblum once said, “Life finds a way.”  Yeah, finds a way to eat you!

What I liked about the first two films is they relied largely on puppets and physical props. They also had a fun cast.  Being in 2001, someone decided to get some cheap CGI for this one. It ranges from decent to atrocious. (When will people learn that physical props hold up longer? If you don’t have the high-end money, stick to the practical.

Without spoiling much, this film follows a familiar storyline as the last.  The special effects aren’t special. In many ways it looks worse than the previous films.  The film drags in the second act for a long time, and there are many contiunity errors.

I am bringing down the film because it isn’t very good, but to be fair. There are far worse horror sequels out there (like Alien 3). The final act of the film is

Burt Gummer is still a fun character, but he shouldn’t be the star of these movies. The final act is enjoyable enough, but doesn’t do enough to make up for the rest of the film.

It could be worse, but considering how much I enjoy the first two Tremors films, it should have been better.

The Ladder:

Tremors (1990)

Tremors 2 (1996)

Tremors 3 (2001)

At least it wasn’t Alien 3!
