Season One: Episode One
“Good News, Bad News”
Air Date: July 5th, 1989
Writers: Larry David/Jerry Seinfeld
Starring: Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander
Jerry and George need to figure out if a female guest has romantic intentions with Jerry or not.
I’ve been a long time fan of “Seinfeld”. It was the “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”(2005-Present) of the 1990’s and frankly still is among the more superior sitcoms in history (wining 3 Golden Globes and 68 other awards/titles). About four friends (Jerry, Kramer, George, and Elaine) living in New York City during the 1990’s (mostly). It was a sitcom that may wander around sensitive topics, but never take a serious stand (It knew what it was and stuck to it.)
This first episode gives us the iconic banter between characters, one of the most beloved aspects of the show. It has many of the classic jokes and even some setup for future episodes. My biggest issue is that there is no Elaine. (There was a Claire, but it never stuck.) It seems she was added after the pilot to try and win over the female demographic and who knows what else.
While not the best episode of the series. It gives you a taste of what the show was about and it seemed just enough people were interested.
