31 Days of Horror: The Mummy (1999)

The Mummy (1999)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy

Starring: Brendan Fraser

An American on an  archaeological dig accidentally awakens a mummy.

I guess this is supposed to be a remake of the 1932 film and that is where a lot of the hate comes from, but I actually have fun with this film.

Let’s be honest, it is more adventure and fantasy, but it does have some horror elements. (Really isn’t a lot of horror just dark fantasy?)

This is a fun movie and probably my favorite featuring Brendan Fraser (Sorry, Encino Man.)  For the time, it was well made with a great villain. The special effects were good for its time and still aren’t terrible.

Brendan Fraser worked for this movie and I sometimes miss him.  Granted, he made some bad decisions, and some worse movies.  Still, I felt he worked for this.

As of now, a remake of this version is coming out in 2017 starring Russell Crowe and Tom Cruise.  It will be part of the updated and very involved Universal Monsters Universe.  (Are they going to fight crime or unite to try to destroy the world? Monster superheroes or super-villains? IDK.)

I am an optimist. While I don’t think all these shared universes need to exist. I welcome someone trying and maybe making it work.

  1. I also think a lot of the hate this one gets is due to the fact it’s supposed to be a remake of a classic, but clearly goes in an entirely different direction. It is a very fun movie, though.
