A Late Movie Review-The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug (2013)

Director: Peter Jackson

Genre: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett, Evangeline Lilly, Benedict Cumberbatch

Starring: Fantasy, Adventure, Action

Rotten Tomatoes: 74$ (A fair score I’d say)  6.8/10 (A bit low for my taste.) 85% audiences enjoyed it (Good enough for me.)

IMDb: 7.9 of 486,000+ (Feels about right)

What I didn’t Like

The biggest issue with this film is that it meanders. It stretches out a story to fill in more time for the sake of being the second movie of a trilogy. This fact is painfully obvious at times.

It also has very awkward pacing where there is some amazing action sequences in the middle of long stretches of downtime. It isn’t as messy as its predecessor, but it is still flawed.

It does more setup for the Lord of the Rings than maybe it should.  I get why it would, but it feels too much like filler.

The ending is unsatisfying considering the title of the film.

What I liked

The acting is solid in this one. Everyone does a sound job in their selective roles.

The humor is toned down a bit in this film. It has some and it works, but the action is the main goal.

The visuals are far improved over the first film. From the set designs to the special effects, everything feels crisper.

Smaug looks absolutely incredible and while others could have done the job, Benedict Cumberbatch nails the voice down perfectly. His linguistic skills are dazzling.

When there is action, it is very entertaining and well choreographed.

The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug is poorly titled. However, it provides audiences with more action, some dazzling visuals, and one incredible looking dragon.  I still think two movies would have been better. However, I think this is a major improvement over The Hobbit: An Incredible Journey.
