Leftover of August 2016

Leftovers of August

The Summer of 2016 was a bust as far as movie were concerned. (Face it, it was a bust all around too and you know it.) This August did have a few surprises in store however. Let’s take a look.

Kubo and the Two Strings

IMDb :8.4 of 5,2o0+ ratings

Genre:Animated, Action, Adventure, Family

Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Charlize Theron, George Takei, Art Parkinson

Budget: 60 Million

Worldwide Box-Office: 29.8 Million (still in theaters)

This was one of the most anticipated movies for me. I was hoping that this was going to be great and it was. In a summer with so few truly great films, this one stands above them all. Excellent visuals and sound. Great storytelling, a beautiful masterpiece by LAIKA. Sadly, it didn’t make nearly enough money. Tragic.

Here is my review of Kubo and the Two Strings

Don’t Breathe

Genre: Thriller

Starring:Stephen Lang

Budget: 9.9 Million

Worldwide Box Office- 35.5 million (Still in theaters)

I laughed how bad this movie looked. I chuckled at the trailers because I found them ridiculous. Then suddenly everyone said it was good, far better than anything they expected.Stephen Lang’s performance is superb. It is a tense and dark thriller that has no right to be as great as it is. It proves that a bad trailer doesn’t always mean the movie itself will be bad. (Some would even call the trailers good which is fine by me.)

Hell or High Water

Genre: Crime, Western, Drama

Starring:Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine, Ben Foster

IMDb: 8.3 of 3,000+ ratings

Box-Office- 9.6 Million (Limited release)

A really solid Jeff Bridges performance in this film complete with a fine Western background. The film is filled with fine actors, an interesting plot. While some people may have wanted it to take more risks, it turned into a very good crime drama.

 Matter of Taste

Suicide Squad

Genre:Action, Adventure, Science-Fiction/Fantasy

Director: David Ayers

Starring: Jared Leto, Will Smith, Viola Davis, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney

Budget: 175 million

Box-Office- Domestic-286.4 million     Worldwide  640.1 million

A lot of people loved this movie including myself. Thought it was a fun comic book/ adult cartoon like film. It was funny, most of the cast was awesome, the action was cool. The movie had heart, laughs, and lots of fun. However, the movies edits were rough, the Joker was cut too much and some just hated him. A lot of people hated this film as well. I may be on the side of liking it, but I think it is fair to say the film has some flaws. Some people can deal with them, others can not. Watch the film and make your decision.

Florence Foster Jenkins

Genre: Biography, Comedy, Drama,

Staring: Meryl Streep, Hugh Grant, Rebecca Ferguson

A heiress with a terrible singing voice dreams of being an opera singer. (She is rich, right? Then she’ll probably get her  way.) This movie does feature Meryl Streep and she is almost always great.  Though the premise feels uninteresting and even annoying to me. However, some people love all sorts of biopics and I believe there is room for all forms. So if you like this movie. By all means enjoy it.

Sausage Party

Genre: Comedy, Animated,

Starring: Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, James Franco, Salma Hayek, Michael Cera

About food which is actually alive. They think when they are chosen by the gods (humans) that they are going somewhere special. The truth becomes that it is nothing like what is expected.  I really liked the concept of the film. It covered some very deep topics, but the humor was far too rotten for my taste.

Pete’s Dragon

Genre:Adventure,Family, Fantasy, Drama,

I feel like the remakes have really become overkill. Their are so many out there now, that they lack the emotion or specialty to it. If you ever wondered why the movie business struggles at times, their lack of risk taking and unoriginal is a major culprit. People said this film was magical, but it’s been done so much. (Plus I wasn’t impressed with the look of the dragon to be honest.)

Hands of Stone

Genre:Drama, Sport, Action, Biography

Starring: Robert De Niro

Robert De Niro has not been right in 2016, though this is a far better film than Dirty Grandpa. Despite a solid cast, the film is only alright.Robert De Niro can make a decent boxing movie still, no argument there.  Is it better than Southpaw or Creed from last year? Hardly, but still watchable.

War Dogs

Genre:Comedy, Crime

Starring: Jonah Hill, Miles Teller

I felt the film was making light of situations that maybe shouldn’t be fun. It is more disturbing and upsetting.  Part of a deeper issue about our culture.  I’ve heard that the movie touches on this and I give it props for doing so.  Still not willing to say this would be the comedy of the year though.

Just Making It

The Mechanic: Resurrection – They really need to stop making everything a franchise. This is more proof that almost every franchise has a day to call it quits. Though I think this one could have stopped after the first.

Ben Hur– It was Hurlariously bad. The movie isn’t a total wash, but that ending is something wretched.

Nine Lives– Make sure you have nine lives if you watch this, because you may lose one. It’s that bad..

Edge of Winter– Yeah, just don’t bother with this one. Just don’t even care about it existing. There is a reason so few saw it and even fewer “liked” it.
