Movie Review: Lights Out (2016) Shining Some Light on this Horror Film.

maxresdefaultLights Out (2016)

Genre: Horror, Fantasy

Starring: Maria Bello

Rotten Tomatoes: 76%  (Way too high) Average grade 6.3/10-(Right on) 68% enjoyed the movie. (Very fair)

IMDb: 6.8 of 17,000+ (I can accept this. Little high though.)

Something lurks in the darkness. It wants something from a small broken family. It will stop at nothing until is has it.

What I dislike

You know going into this film that there are going to be a lot of jump scares. Things jumping out of the darkness at you. It is a premise that has been done very effective in other movies. This movie doesn’t offer more than that one kind of scare. I have always found those types of scares to be effective, but cheap.

The acting in the movie is alright at best. Child acting is very hard and that is all I’m going to say.

The premise really doesn’t merit a feature length film. After a half hour, I was ready for the film to be over.

What I Like

The style of scares in this movie are things that jump from the darkness. They make good use of that. To make you afraid of the dark again, but it wasn’t the best I’ve seen by far. The film didn’t suck in any category really. Just standard procedure really.

I think Maria Bello was very good in this movie. She was the standout actor in this one.

The premise reminded me of Darkness Falls (2003), Dead Silence (2007), and Pumpkinhead (1988).

Conclusion

I thought that 2016 would be a great year for animated and horror films. I’ve been correct on both and the year isn’t completely over. Lights Out works better as a short film honestly, but this isn’t terrible. Just acceptable for a decent scary movie. Worth streaming or renting sometime, but best to not see it in theaters.

Modern Horror Ladder– Wan was a producer on this one so I’ll add a couple of his movies.

The Conjuring 2 (2016)

The Conjuring (2013)

Pumpkinhead (1988)

Pitch Black (2000)

Lights Out (Short Film)

Dead Silence (2007)

Darkness Falls (2003)

Lights Out (2016)- Far from the worst horror film this year, but fairly average. (Though an average horror movie is good by today’s horror standards.)
