What to Watch and What to Run From
First, let’s look at the box-office hits of the season so far.
Deadpool– Budget 58 Million
Box Office: Domestic- 254.1 million Worldwide- 520.6 million
Kung Fu Panda 3– Budget: NA
Box-Office- Domestic- 119.4 million Worldwide: 297.6 million
Gods of Egypt
Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Starring: Gerard Butler
This film looks like it was made for the sole purpose to try out new GGI technology. It really isn’t worth your time.
My call: Run far away from this film. Not only is it whitewashed (another Egyptian film like that is one too many), but the quality of the writing, acting, characters, and just about anything in this movie is substandard.
IMDb: 5.5 of 1,929 ratings
Andrew’s Pick of the Week (By Default)
Eddie the Eagle
Genre: Biography, Comedy, Drama
Starring: Taron Egerton, Hugh Jackman
The story of Eddie Edwards, the tenacious British ski jumper at the 1988 Winter Olympics.
I am not a huge one for biopics. I simply don’t care enough about the subject matter. This is another one of those. Still, it looks entertaining and stars Hugh Jackman, that is always a good start.
My call: If you like Biopics, then this is a film for you. Otherwise pass on watching a new release this week.
IMDb: 7.6 of 700 ratings
Genre: Crime, Thriller
Starring: Casey Affleck, Anthony Mackie, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Norman Reedus, Woody Harrelson, Kate Winslet, Aaron Paul, Gal Gadot.
A masterful gang of criminals and corrupt cops plan a murder of an officer as a distraction for the biggest heist of there lives. Things go awry.
You’ve seen this all before. The cast is really cool, many of them look to do great work. Still, we’ve seen this movie done better. I suppose if you are bored and have nothing to do. Maybe worth your time.
My Call: If you simply must watch a film this week and enjoy crime-thrillers, then this is your movie this weekend.
IMDb: 6.7 of 1,808
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny
Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama
Another sequel that probably isn’t needed. Chances are this is just trying to squeeze money out of an old idea. If you liked the original in 2000, then you probably won’t hate this film.
IMDb: 6.8 of 654 ratings
My call: I’m not seeing a need to watch this film, especially in theaters. Again, if you love kung fu and the original movie, you will likely have a good time here. Just don’t expect much in terms of new material.
My Box Office Prediction
Deadpool could drop from the top spot with Eddie the Eagle taking it down, but I somewhat doubt it. Kung Fu Panda 3 will likely be taken out of the top five. I think Eddie the Eagle has the best chance of winning the weekend. Expect strong showing from Triple 9 which features an ensemble cast. Not clear winner this weekend, but I expect Deadpool to remain among the top three.
2 Eddie the Eagle
3 Triple 9
