The Rewind: The Hurricane

The Hurricane (1999)

Genre: Biography, Drama, Crime, Sport

Director: Norman Jewison   (Moonstruck)

Starring: Denzel Washington, Liev Strieber

Based on the true story of Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, a boxer wrongly imprisoned for murder and the people who fought to prove his innocence.

This movie is incredibly well done. A lot of that goes to Denzel Washington who should of won the Oscar this year for this role. It addresses issues of our society and how we have dealt with race. How an innocent man can be sent to jail for a crime he didn’t commit. A clear scapegoat because of the color of his skin.

This film also has a lot to do with the ideas of hope, redemption, and battling oneself.  We are often our greatest enemies and Rubin Carter had to battle not only society, but his inner demons.  Can he overcome all of this and come out a stronger individual or will these events break him?

This is definitely worth watching and again it should of won an Oscar for Denzel.
