Director Who- Joss Whedon

Director Who

Joss Whedon

Known for: Passionate work on science fiction and fantasy projects. Using large casts very effectively. May sometimes lean on familiar storylines, but he adds the right amount of humor and tries to make it his own with developed characters. He certainly enjoys using special effects, especially when given a massive budget, but he uses them wisely. Doesn’t cut corners and consistently tries to put out high quality movies that also can hold up critically.

While I primarily focus on movies and not television shows, I did want to mention that Whedon established himself on television series. Particularly with the very successful and popular show Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)

Firefly

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Angel

Parenthood

Roseanne

Dollhouse

Agents of SHIELD

Whedon established himself on television as a successful and passionate writer. Able to incorporate large casts of actors into a single script in a competent manner. (a talent that should never go overlooked.)

Serenity (2005)

Genre: Action/Adventure/Science Fiction

IMDB- 8.0 of 219,000+

If you like a good Sci-fi Adventure film then this one fits the bill. If you enjoyed the show Firefly, then you will likely have a good time with this movie. It features the same cast and is a continuation of their space adventure. The show was unjustly canceled, but these characters live on in this great movie.

The Avengers (2012)
Genre: Adventure/Action/Science Fiction

IMDB- 8.2 of 808, 000 +

Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson

What put Whedon on the map for most people is the immensely successful Avengers movie. Whedon was able to have all these characters on screen and make them matter. He used his special effects appropriately and gave audiences everywhere among the most entertaining movies ever created. The Avengers was a special kind of movie, but even Whedon himself acknowledged its flaws. So, he got the chance to direct the sequel and couldn’t say no to the opportunity.

Much Ado About Nothing (2012)

Genre:Comedy/Drama/Romance

IMDB 7.3 of 12,425 ratings

Cast: Nathan Fillion, Clark Gregg

Here is Whedon’s star studded Shakespearean movie. I watched this and I thought it was a fine film, but I like Kenneth Branagh’s 1990’s version better. Still, for an updated version of the play, this one holds its own thanks to a talented cast. If you like movies based on Shakespearean plays then this one you will want to watch.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

IMDB 8.5 of 36,000 ratings+

Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, James Spader, Don Cheadle, Sam Wilson, Paul Bettany

Highly anticipated film. I’ve heard a lot of good reviews and great things coming from this one so far. I’m very excited for it and I’m hoping it corrects some of the flaws of the Marvel cinematic universe so far. (Don’t just tease killing people off, if you are going to do it then just do it. ) I will be reviewing this film later on this coming week so stay tuned.
