Rewind- 1970’s-Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)

Genre:Family, Fantasy, Musical

Writer: Roald Dahl (Story and Screenplay)

Starring Gene Wilder.

Few movies have I enjoyed greatly as a child and decades later can sit down, watch and enjoy it as much as I did back then.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a “modern” classic.

Gene Wilder was brilliant in this role as Willy Wonka. He has such range that is unbelievable. The moments where he seems to channel madness.

I’m not huge on musicals, but most of the songs were catchy and enjoyable. However, the Oompa Loompa’s songs were by far the best.

The story is a little creepy by today’s standards, but I think that some of the best films have a twisted point of view.

This movie is beautiful from a production standpoint.  The colors, the wild inventions, the many imaginative ways that people get in trouble in this film.  All of it is exceptional.

They found a way to bring Dahl’s imaginative world successfully from book to film and that is a rare feat in itself.  I love this world filled with wonder and a touch (and then some) of the surreal.  It is a lovely family film, but if you are sensitive, it may best to be avoided.
