New Releases for 1/23/15
This week is the biggest opening Friday of the year (considering that it is January, not saying all that much.)
The Boy Next Door– Starring Jennifer Lopez and Kristen Chenoweth. This movie reminds me of many films. It’s about a woman hooking up with a hot young neighbor. She has regrets and breaks it off, but the hot young stud won’t take no for an answer and gets more involved with the women’s life and really makes it a living hell. I would save your money for a better movie.
IMDB rating- 4.9 from 182 ratings.
Rotten Tomatoes 15%
What to watch instead.
New Feature update- when I suspect a movie is bad and I have a similar movie that I consider superior. I will recommend these for you.
Watch Play Misty for Me (1974) Clint Eastwood and Jessica Walter (Voice of Mallory Archer) Second choice- Fatal Attraction (1987) starring Michael Douglas and Glen Close
I’ve also decided to add Rotten Tomatoes to my reviews because I like to see the difference between normal audience and critics. Sometimes I agree with critics more than an audience.
Mortdecai– Starring Johnny Depp, Ewan McGregor, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Paul Bettany. I want this film to be good. I thought the trailers looked humorous. It seems to play off of similar humor he original Pink Panther movies. Of course, mastering something like Peter Sellers did is hard and I’m doubtful Johnny Depp did that which means this movie could wind up be very bad.

Watch the original Pink Panther movies. Any of the Peter Seller versions will do
Strange Magic-Starring Kristen Chenoweth. I don’t feel Chenoweth picks movies where her talents are able to shine. This is an animated movie from the imagination of George Lucas. Twenty years ago that would be a selling point, but nowadays that’s a scary thing. This movie looked at times enjoyable, but it didn’t seem it knew what it wanted to be. A real identity crisis from start to finish and childish humor (too childish even for an animated movie) throughout.
Rotten Tomatoes- 19%
What to watch instead- Fern Gully- The Last Rainforest (1992) starring the voices of Christian Slater, Robin Williams, Cheech and Chong, and Tim Curry.
Cake– Starring Jennifer Aniston, Anna Kendrick and William H. Macy. A movie about a woman’s struggles through personal tragedy and the infatuation of another girl’s suicide in her chronic pain support group. This movie sounds really depressing, but sometimes films depicting the ugliness of life can also teach us important values.
IMDB- 6.5 from 3,229 ratings
Rotten Tomatoes- 37%
Black Sea– starring Jude Law. A submarine movie about a shady crew searching in the Black Sea in a Submarine for another sunken submarine loaded with gold.. A treasure hunt movie. If you like a decent submarine movie, that is somewhat predictable, but still effectively executed. This is likely the best overall movie being released this weekend.
IMDB rating- 6.8 from 856 ratings.
