Release date- March 6th, 2015.
New Addition- Unfinished Business–
Starring Vince Vaughn, Dave Franco,Sienna Miller, James Marsden and Nick Frost.
This movie looks like it could be pretty funny. The issue is it that Vince Vaughn is in it and he has become rather notorious for less than stellar movies of recent. I liked the trailer. It did look like it had a good cast and some humorous jokes involving sex and drugs which is often the case with many comedies today. Steve Conrad did write the screen story and he also wrote the screen story for Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013) which I enjoyed. I’m not here to tell you this is going to be the comedy of the year, but I think it has potential as an early contender.
Year of the Movie: March 2015
March is always when things heat up in the movie year. What I’m seeing from March 2015 so far is that we will have numerous movies that are questionable. They could be very good, but maybe not up to the standards of Summer Blockbusters of autumn award season.
March 6th 2015
Director- Neill Blomkamp
Starring- Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver,
This film is about a robot who has the ability to learn and be more human, The next stage in evolution of robotics. This robot will come up against prejudice, fear, and hatred because people don’t understand it and or refuse to accept its existence even though it only wants to exist. I am not a technophile My technology dates back a decade (Flip phone- sure, why not?) I fear the possibilities of what an unchecked advancement of technology may do to human society. That being said, I also believe in progress. I get up everyday and try to be a better man than I was the day before. To break down my fears, and my own prejudices, and accept and understand new concepts and new people into my life. This movie is created by a director who has used social commentary very effectively through film (especially District 9.) This film looks like it could be very thought-provoking. It also could be a sentimental crap fest. No matter what, it is an ambitious piece of work and I’m curious to see how this comes out.
The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Starring- Bill Nighy, Judi Dench, Richard Gere, Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire)
The original movie is this unique comedy that may not be for everyone, but is well crafted. Essentially, this is a continuation of everything you liked from the first film. It is another tale filled with dry wit, and feel good moments with a solid cast. With the exception of The Last Airbender (2012), I must say that I really love Dev Patel’s energy he brings to a movie.
Director- Kenneth Branaugh
Starring – Helena Bonham Carter (Sweeney Todd) , Stellan Skarsgard (Good Will Hunting/Avengers/Thor)
Disney has been reworking many of their old classics into live-action films. This is the newest addition in that movement. It is a retelling of the story that is Cinderella. Just by looking at the trailer, you know it’s going to be a whimsical ride of a fairy tale movie. There is nothing wrong with that and I know quite a few people who will enjoy it. This movie doesn’t appeal to my interests. However, as a guy who writes about movies, I think it looks imaginative and well done. I’d say it will be an early nomination for fantasy movie of the year.
In the Heart of the Sea (Delayed to December 11th 2015 release)
Director: Ron Howard
Starring- Chris Hemsworth , Brendan Gleeson
This is the story of Moby Dick and the men who faced the legendary beast.. It is based on a true story (the key word there is based.) Ron Howard often puts out good work and I’m interested in seeing Chris Hemsworth in more non-Thor things. (though he still may wield a hammer at some point in this movie.) A good cast led by a good director about an interesting and true story. You at least have my attention.
The next movie in the Divergent series.
Starring- Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet, Naomi Watts,
If you watched Divergent and enjoyed it. The estimated 150,947,895 domestic total suggest plenty enjoyed it. (Stat courtesy of Boxofficemojo.com) This is the continuation and escalation of the events which began in the first one. If you are into this kind of series, then this is likely going to excite you. I believe this is going to do fairly well if not better than the first movie.
Starring- Idris Elba, Javier Bardem, Sean Penn,
A star-studded cast is featured in this action/crime drama that is very much in the style of Taken. (Yet another film.) I’m not a big fan of crime films, especially ones that I feel like I’ve already seen. However, when you have a cast as talented as this one, there is always the opportunity to create something wonderful. This movie in the end looks pretty cool. What are you thoughts?
Quick Note- Get Hard– Stars Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart. The two could be comedic gold, but there is no evidence to suggest this will be worth a look yet.
Genre – Animated/Adventure/Family
Voices of Jim Parsons, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Steve Martin
I’m unsure about this one. There have been several movies that have attempted to make aliens look cute and or loveable (Monsters vs. Aliens, Planet 51, Escape From Planet Earth) all of which were met with little or no success. Making a good animated alien based movie is a very tough road. However, they brought in a unique cast of voices for this film and Dreamworks Animation often puts out respectable if not always top of the line work. I’m hopeful that this film will be a moderate success.
