A Look Back at 2014 Movies- July

July 2014-
Tammy– I loved Melissa McCarthy in Bridesmaids(2011), I really enjoyed the combo of her and Sandra Bullock in The Heat (2013). I was hoping this movie would be another funny summer comedy, but it wasn’t. I suppose it was a bit funnier than Identity Thief (2013), but that’s a low bar to breach.

Planes; Fire and Rescue– They forced the first one into theaters and it really shouldn’t have been.  This is the rare sequel that is slightly better than the first one.  Slightly funnier, but still not worth your time if you are over the age of seven. Given that this year was awful for the little ones (ages 4-10), I guess this does the trick.
The Purge; Anarchy – I didn’t like the first one. Wasn’t crazy about this one either, but it was much improved over the original.  It was almost like the people who directed this film said, “That first movie wasn’t all that good. Let’s try to fix our mistakes.”  They improved a lot of things in this one. So much to the point that I don’t consider it a bad movie, but just mediocre, but that’s good for a horror movie.

Sex Tape– It had it’s moments, but overall you can pass on it.  I would rather have seen a two-hour How I Met Your Mother couple Lily and Marshall version of this movie. The two actors worked great together. Ultimately it is bad joke writing that makes this movie flop.

Hercules  Better than the Legend of Hercules from January, but that’s not really a compliment.  The Rock aka Dwayne Johnson works as Hercules. The movie is pleasant enough, but doesn’t wow me. When this year comes to a close, this isn’t the movie that is going to linger in my mind.

Lucy– I like Scarlett Johansson, but this movie sucked. First off, the whole premise of the movie is based on a myth that humans only use ten percent of their brain.  The very basis of the movie is wrong. Then you just have generic action/violence. Don’t really care about the character. She essentially becomes a god, and disconnected from the world. By the end of the movie, I want her to go away. I can’t really root for or care about anyone in the film. It was a mind-numbing movie in the worst kind of way for me.

What was your favorite July movie?
