Hellraiser (1987).

Writer/Director:Clive Barker (1980’s Rob Zombie)

I consider Hellraiser to be Barker’s finest work to date. The film is about demons from a sadomasochistic underworld in hell searching for a man who escaped them. Meanwhile a small family, relatives of Frank (the victim and man they seek) move into the house. Disturbing things unfolds.

This movie doesn’t rely on special effects so much as it does solid acting performances (Doug Bradley as Pinhead is memorizing) and costume design.  I have a lot of respect for this movie because of that. You understand the various dynamics between the characters.

I think if you are a fan of horror then the original is a must see.  This did become a horror franchise and like most horror franchises, the majority of sequels are awful.  I think Hellraiser 2: Hellbound (1988) is among the better ones.  This movie is rather gory and brutal to watch at times. It is definitely not PG-13 horror, but it is very creative in that horrifying way.  If you are into that sort of thing, please check these movies out!

Yes, there will be a new one out next year Hellraiser: Judgment.  Straight to video so you know there isn’t much demand for it.  (Yet they still made it!)
